Planting and Care Guidelines

Soil Preparation: Ensure the soil is well-drained and fertile. Perform soil tests to determine nutrient requirements and amend the soil accordingly.

Planting Time: Plant at the beginning of the rainy season for optimal growth. In irrigated areas, planting can be done year-round.

Spacing: Plant seeds at a spacing of 25-30 cm within rows and 75-90 cm between rows to allow for adequate growth and air circulation.

Depth: Sow seeds at a depth of 3-5 cm to ensure good seed-to-soil contact and proper germination.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting and follow up with top-dressing during the growing season as per soil test recommendations.

Weeding: Keep the field free from weeds, especially during the early stages of growth, to reduce competition for nutrients and water.

Pest and Disease Management: Monitor the crop regularly for signs of pests and diseases. Use integrated pest management practices to control infestations.

Watering: Ensure the crop receives adequate water, especially during critical growth stages such as flowering and grain filling.

Harvesting and Post-Harvest Handling

Harvesting: Harvest maize when the kernels are fully mature and have reached the appropriate moisture content (usually around 20-25%). This can be determined by the black layer at the base of the kernels.

Drying: After harvesting, dry the maize cobs in the sun or using mechanical driers to reduce the moisture content to around 13-14% for safe storage.

Storage: Store the dried maize in clean, dry, and well-ventilated storage facilities to prevent mold growth and pest infestation.
